How to play the numbers game in job hunting (without burning out)🐰
When it comes to job hunting, numbers matter. The more quality applications you send out, the better your chances. But it’s not just about volume. It’s about how you play the game. Below are strategies that have worked for me and many of my peers in design, product, and tech. Think of this as a playbook you can pick up today and actually use.

This newsletter is brought to you by MeeBoss, Tinder for job seekers and hiring managers.
MeeBoss is putting on the Seattle Startup Hiring Festival on Tuesday, September 30th at Thinkspace Lake Union. It’s going to bring together 30+ startups that are actively hiring and around 200 job seekers for a full day of panels, networking, meals, and a closing happy hour.
The cool part is that MeeBoss uses their match-first, chat-first platform, so you’ll actually be able to start conversations with startups before the event and then meet them in person during the festival. You’ll also be right alongside partners like Plug And Play, GeekWire, and WTIA, making this one of the most connected hiring events in Seattle!
Here’s the registration link (FREE) to attend: https://luma.com/wy8to9vj
Also stay tuned for their hiring festival in San Francisco in November!
Identify the patterns and seasons
Hiring comes in waves. Many companies ramp up early in the year (Q1), again in late summer, and slow down near year-end holidays. Recognizing these cycles means you apply when recruiters are actively looking.
To do: Track job boards weekly. Note when listings appear, how long they stay up, and when responses come in. This helps you time your outreach.
Apply early and aim to be in the first 10
Recruiters often skim the earliest applicants first. Once they find strong fits, later applications can get overlooked.
To do: Use job alerts. Block 15 minutes each morning to apply as soon as new listings go live.
Channel-maxxing to broaden reach
Different companies lean on different platforms. Limiting yourself to LinkedIn alone cuts your chances.
To do: Spread your net across LinkedIn, Indeed, Glassdoor, Handshake, niche Discord communities, and industry job boards. If you’re targeting social impact, check platforms like Remotely or mission-driven boards.
Polish your digital estates
In remote-first hiring, your online presence including your LinkedIn and other forms of social media where recruiters and fellow designers hang out the most speaks before you do.
To do:
LinkedIn: clear role descriptions, cut fluff, highlight outcomes, post relatable + insightful stories about your career journey.
Portfolio: showcase projects with context and results.
Referrals & reviews: build credibility with endorsements.
This becomes your “digital handshake” with recruiters who skim in seconds.
Switch it up when stuck
To do:
Change your messaging style.
Try a different resume format.
Explore new channels like in-person meetups or virtual career fairs.
Adjust your target companies.
Target the right subset of companies
Mid-sized or scaling startups are often hungrier for talent than large enterprises. They value initiative more than brand-name credentials. Plus this is the application pool that tends to be overlooked by job applicants.
To do: Create a short list of 10–15 companies in growth mode. Research their funding rounds, recent launches, or open roles to spot signals of expansion.
Treat interviews like conversations
You’re not just being evaluated, you’re also evaluating them. A natural flow helps both sides.
To do: Approach the call as if you’re hosting. Set a comfortable tone, ask thoughtful questions, and make it feel like collaboration instead of interrogation.
Break the rules when it counts
To do:
Find your potential manager’s email and send a short, thoughtful note.
After the interview, thank them directly instead of relying on generic recruiter follow-ups.
This shows initiative and signals you care about the role, not just “a role.”
Don’t underestimate in-person connections
Career fairs, club events, and even casual meetups give you real-time feedback you’ll never get from an online application.
To do: Print a few clean copies of your resume. Hand them out at events. The best part isn’t just the shot at a job, but the feedback recruiters often give. That feedback compounds into stronger applications down the line.
And that are 9 strategies to play the number game right. Applying to 200 jobs blindly isn’t the goal. Applying strategically, consistently, and with adaptability is. That’s how you play the numbers game without losing your energy or your sense of self-worth.
