Config 2026 recap + what to do as a designer
Your Design Buddies guide to everything Figma launched and exactly what to do about it this week.
Figma’s Config 2026 keynote dropped last week. The whole theme: everything now lives on the canvas with code, motion, shaders, custom tools, and a much smarter agent. Dylan Field framed it like this: “AI has lowered the floor, but it hasn’t raised the ceiling. That part is on us.”
So let’s not just read about it. Below is what shipped, who can actually use it today, and a concrete move for each.
But first, we’re excited to be annoucing Hop, design mentorship platform!
Want to be one of our first 30 founding mentors and be let off the waitlist first for early alpha testing? Email Grace Ling grace@designbuddies.community with a quick intro about you and your design experience!
Thank you all 500+ of y’all + more we can’t see past the hill for coming to our world’s largest design picnic next friday!! More photos coming soon meanwhile here’s our group selfie and video~
Join us every friday 11 am pacific time on Discord too for feedback fridays! RSVP
Do these first
If you read nothing else, do these:
Open any design file → flip the toolbar toggle to Motion. Add a preset animation to one component. That’s your first canvas animation, done in under a minute. (Free on all plans.)
Join the beta waitlist at figma.com/config-betas, one form covers code layers, 3D transforms, and the agent in FigJam + Slides. Takes 30 seconds and gets you in line.
Ask the agent to build you a tool. Prompt it for a small plugin (e.g. “sort selected layers by name”) and watch it appear natively in your file.
Watch the keynote if you missed it: Config 2026 on YouTube.
1. Figma Motion: animate without leaving Figma
What it is: A real timeline inside Figma Design with keyframes, presets, easing curves, and spring physics. Build motion from scratch, layer it onto existing designs, or ask the agent to generate a first pass and refine from there. Because it’s built on Figma’s platform, you can animate a component once and have that motion travel across every screen, like fills and typography do. Dev Mode shows a read-only timeline you can inspect and copy straight to CSS, JSON, or React, plus MCP export to your coding tools.
Who gets it: Open beta, Full seats on all plans (including free). Editing needs can edit access. Publishing animated components, agent-generated motion, and hi-res video export require a Full seat on a paid plan. Exports today: MP4, GIF, WEBM, Animated SVG, Lottie is coming.
Do this: Take one existing prototype interaction you’ve faked with smart-animate and rebuild it properly on the timeline. Then pop into Dev Mode and copy the React/CSS, hand that to your engineers instead of a Loom recording.
2. Custom Shaders: striking visuals, no GLSL required
What it is: Prompt the Figma agent (or give it a reference image) and it builds a WebGPU shader for you as an effect (transforms what’s in the layer) or a fill (a brand-new material). Everything comes back parameterized, so you get real on-canvas controls and can stack effects like gradient maps, riso print, or luminance particles. Save and reuse them across files.
Who gets it: Open beta. Creating custom shaders via the agent needs a Full seat on a paid plan (Figma Design, Draw, and Motion). Using Figma’s first-party shaders is available on all plans. Not available on Education, Government, or Starter. Export works to Figma Make and other platforms via MCP but heads up, shaders don’t show in Dev Mode yet.
Do this: Stop hunting Dribbble for that grainy gradient hero background. Prompt the agent “a soft animated mesh gradient in our brand purples with subtle noise” save it as a reusable fill, and apply it across your marketing screens for an instant on-brand glow-up.
3. Generative Plugins: build your own tools by describing them
What it is: Tell the agent the tool you need like the behavior, controls, and parameters and it builds a plugin that lives right in your file and feels native. No local dev environment, no plugin API knowledge. Think: reorder/sort layers by criteria, apply consistent spacing across a selection, or find-and-replace text or colors across a file.
Who gets it: Open beta on paid plans (Design, Draw, Motion); Figma-made plugins are on all plans. Plugins you build live in your file (anyone with file access can use them) and follow you across your own files. Public Community publishing and private org publishing are coming. Classic developer plugins aren’t going anywhere.
👉 Do this: Pick the most annoying repetitive thing in your workflow this week: renaming layers, fixing inconsistent padding and spend 5 minutes prompting a plugin to kill it forever. Bonus: it’s reusable across all your files.
4. Weave Tools in Figma Design: production image tasks
What it is: Weave’s node-based generative workflows, now usable directly in Figma Design through a simple UI. Plug in inputs and reliably knock out common AI image jobs, replace a background, drop a logo onto a product, change an aspect ratio, without writing prompts. Same inputs, consistent results every time. Plus a library of ready-made Weave workflows on the Community to duplicate and remix.
Who gets it: Open beta for Professional, Organization, and Enterprise plans with Full seats. Weave workflow templates on the Community are generally available to Full seats on any plan (with a Figma Weave account). Not available for K-12 Education, Government, or Starter.
Do this: Next time you need 10 product shots on the same background, run a Weave background-replace tool instead of round-tripping to Photoshop. Save the workflow and reuse it for the whole campaign.
5. The Figma Agent: now it knows how you work
What it is: The agent (which rolled out to everyone the day before the keynote) leveled up. Skills package your team’s conventions into reusable, on-demand instructions. Connectors (MCP) let it reach into Notion, Slack, Granola, Hex, GitHub, Atlassian and more — and write updates back. It can now search the web, fetch URLs, and take file attachments (Figma files, images, code, PDFs, spreadsheets) for grounded results. New agent threads in Design are now visible to your team by default, so you can build on each other’s explorations.
Who gets it: Open beta on Professional, Organization, and Enterprise plans; Full seats chat in any Design file, and View/Dev/Collab seats can try it in Draft files. Free during beta, no AI credits consumed (standard credit usage kicks in once it’s generally available). Not on Education, Government, or Starter.
Do this: Build one skill that captures your design system rules (”always use our spacing tokens, our type scale, and label buttons in sentence case”). Then connect your agent to Notion or Slack so it can pull a brief and post updates without you copy-pasting. That’s your design system, enforced by an assistant.
6. Code Layers: code as a design material (closed beta)
What it is: The headline concept of the keynote. Turn any design layer into an interactive code layer with one click (or a prompt), then duplicate it to explore directions side by side, riff, comment, and iterate with your team like any other frame. Move both ways: extract a code layer back into editable design layers, and push design changes back into code with one click. You can even upload a local codebase or clone a GitHub repo to prototype from your real components.
Who gets it: Closed beta, not broadly available yet. Rolling out starting in July.
Do this: Join the waitlist now (same form as 3D transforms and the agent in FigJam/Slides). If you work closely with engineers, this is the one to get early, start thinking about which prototype you’d want to make actually interactive with your live components.
Also previewed (early-access sign-up)
Three more things Figma teased, available via the same config-betas form:
3D transforms in Figma Design: native spatial design with dev-ready export, great paired with Motion.
Figma agent in FigJam & Slides: the agent expanding beyond Design files.
Code layers — listed above; it’s part of this same waitlist.
